Where this book came from: I know I got this one on my California trip back in March, and I’m 99 percent sure it specifically came from Warwick’s in La Jolla.
Why this book: I read some of Dorothy Parker’s short stories a long time ago, and I want to read more of her work. I was on the hunt for poetry and figured I should give some of hers a try.
Thoughts: This was . . . fine! Some of the lines really hit me, and I appreciated Parker’s wit. But I also found most of the poems pretty light. I understood all of them——or, at least, I think I did——so that was a nice change, but I think I was expecting more from one of America’s great literary minds.
Library updates:
For some of us, it’s spooky season all the time. But the rest of the world has transitioned officially into general autumnal vibes——“hoa hoa hoa season,” for those in the Twilight know. Britt——hi, Britt!——and I went to see Breaking Dawn, Part 1 yesterday (Saturday) and it was just as glorious of a ride as I remembered it being the first time I saw it in theaters. It also felt like a good way to say a fond farewell to October, since the last twenty minutes or so are basically a horror movie.
I went to a party with Tori——hi, Tori!——on Friday night for Halloween. I was a witch for the third year running, though I tried out a slightly different outfit than previous years. I’m pretty sure I also lost my hat at some point, so RIP Amazon witch hat. But anyhow, it’s fun to walk around New York on Halloween night, to see cute kids and pets in costumes along with all the giddy college students and exhausted adults. (I put myself firmly in that last category. Spending most of Saturday before the movie nursing an awful, mostly Fireball-induced hangover proves it.) It kind of makes me wish people dressed up like that more often, adding a bit more whimsy to every subway ride and crosswalk encounter.
And that’s really all I’ve got for this missive! I’ll just leave you with one final note: Anyone living in New York City, make sure you vote!! Election Day is this Tuesday and polls will be open from 6am to 9pm. Find your polling place here and educate yourself on the ballot proposals here.
Closing thoughts:
Get cozy, embrace the chill, and go vote.
